Everyone has experienced a camping trip where they were uncomfortable. Recently, I had the opportunity to check out a high alpine camp in the winter. I had my standard sleeping bag and two others… and it was still cold. Having the right gear is everything, especially in the backcountry.

The Kelty Cosmic series sleeping bag has been around for a while. However, in 2020 it was produced with 550 fill down instead of full-synthetic down materials. That means it is lighter than ever and is now more packable than previous models. The low price (relative to the market) makes it an excellent choice for those looking for gear on a budget.

What to look for in a Sleeping Bag?

The most important features to pay attention to when selecting a sleeping bag are length, temperature rating, fill/material, and shape.

Length:

Are you tall? Short? Pick a sleeping bag that comfortably conforms to your length. If you are over 6 feet tall, you may want to look into purchasing a long size. Length is critical if you are buying a mummy bag. If the sleeping bag is too short, you may not be able to fit your head in the bag! Fortunately, the cosmic 20 does have a regular, short, and long option available. In frigid environments, it is crucial to minimize void space in the bag.

Temperature Rating:

The temperature rating is the most important feature as it relates to safety and comfort. If your destination is extremely cold, keep that in mind. Most people do not like sleeping outside in subzero temperatures, but many camping destinations can be cold at night, even in the summer. Alpine locations may be warm and sunny during the day but quickly become cold, snowy, and windy at night.

At the same time, the temperature rating is relative. The cosmic 20 should keep you “safe” even in 20-degree weather. However, that does not mean you will necessarily be warm if you use a 20-degree bag in 20-degree weather. If you tend to run cold, plan to purchase a bag that has a higher rating than the temp you plan to use it in.

See the 0-degree version here: Amazon.

You can also add a sleeping bag liner or down blanket like this one to increase warmth while camping in cold temperatures. This bag will be an excellent option for you in the vast majority of camping situations. It is considered a three-season bag.

Material & Fill:

Materials contribute to the temperature rating and the comfort of a sleeping bag. The cosmic is quite soft, and the exterior is smooth. Lower-quality bags tend to be rough and a bit stiff (the shell, that is), but this bag is not despite its low price. The shell is made of Nylon, while the interior is made of ultra-soft polyester. The interior is stuffed with 550 fill down., The bag is treated with a water-repellant that allows the bag to stay warm even in damp conditions. The water repellant treatment is PFC-free, so it is safe for you and the environment.

Shape & Size:

Trapezoidal! The cosmic series bags are trapezoidal in shape. The bag is wider in the torso area, but tapers gradually toward the bottom of the bag. The trapezoid shape minimizes empty space in the bag and increases thermal efficiency. Even so, the foot box is not too restricting on the feet.

The bag is not too heavy and would serve as a great backpacking tent. However, thru-hikers might appreciate an ultralight option like this. There are different bags available for men and women that have slightly different forms and colors. All of the cosmic series bags are mummy bags. They wrap fully around the top of the head. Mummy bags are essential in cold weather camping. Most users report that the bag is quite durable for the price.
