Coleman 4 Person Instant Cabin Tent Review

Coleman 4 Person Instant Cabin Tent Review

A brand that makes infinite products for the outdoors, and today we will be checking one of their many variations of tents on the fastpitch scene. The Coleman 4 person instant tent has become a best seller on huge stores such as Amazon, Ebay and Walmart, to name just a few.

Often stealing the ‘top pick’ or ‘best choice’ tags on these sites, but is it just because of the budget price tag?

Well with a thorough look over and test, we don’t think so, but for sure one of the more favorable features on any product is a modest price tag.

It suits anyone who is looking for a tent that sets up instantly, and that can comfortably fit 2 people, or those that enjoy solo camping in a tent with a generous amount of space.

With many more notable and practical features to dig into, let’s move on with the review.

What We Think

Tents come in a wide range of sizes and quality, with Coleman usually nearing the top of the heap. This 4-person cabin tent excels in its construction and functionality, housing anywhere from 1-4 people in a 56 square foot interior.

Double thick, durable polyester fabric makes up the canopy and integrated fly, and you also get Coleman’s high-quality Weathertec system.

These are additional waterproofing features that most tent companies don’t include. The integrated fly can help for a light misting of rain, but you should invest in a rain fly for this tent if you want to stay dry during storms.

As it costs less than $20 USD, it’s pretty much a no-brainer to add a level of comfort that could otherwise spoil your camping adventure if you went without it.

Purchasing a can of waterproofing sealant spray is also a good idea, as you can seal up every inch of the tent. With enough room for a queen mattress, good ventilation and a reasonable price, this could be the perfect tent for you.

What We Love

Weathertec Waterproofing

Coleman’s waterproofing is well-known as they tend to include their Weathertec system on the majority of their tents, as it offers excellent all-around protection. This system consists of a few features – a water-resistant canopy and fly, inverted stitches, zipper cuffs, taped seams, a strong frame, and a welded and reinforced bathtub floor.

Inverted stitches and taped seams help keep water from entering small cracks in the canopy and fly’s construction, while zipper cuffs act as covers to perform the same function. The frame makes it resilient during strong wind gusts, and the reinforced and welded bathtub floor eliminates groundwater from seeping in.

While this tent is designed with an integrated rain fly, it needs a traditional fly to keep you dry when storms hit. Coleman offers a separately purchased rainfly for under $20, and is a must for anyone that intends to use this tent in weather that isn’t limited to sunny days.

Pitch In Under 1 Minute

Setting up tents can be a real hassle. But with these instant shelters that are now flooding the market, that frustration is virtually eliminated. Boasting a set up time of under a minute, one person can easily have this model up and running in record time, even if they’ve never pitched a tent before.

Start By Extending the Poles Outwards

Using telescoping legs that are already pre-assembled to the canopy, fully extending them is the most labor-intensive part of raising this shelter. Once that is done, you just prop it up, and secure the corners and guy lines using the supplied set of stakes. It doesn’t get much easier than that.

Big Tent, Small Case

With enough room inside this 56 square foot beast to hold up to 4 people, you can fit a queen size mattress inside of it, ensuring a comfortable night’s rest for everyone.

Ample Space for a Queen Mattress

Ideally, you will want to use this tent with a maximum of 2 people (4 can get a bit cramped), as you need to take into account having some extra room to move around freely.

In the case of this model, less is more when it comes to the number of campers.

A center height of just under 5 feet gives you ample headroom for moving around and sitting up easily.

Unlike a lot of competitor models, this tent comes with its own an expandable carrying and storage bag. Which eliminates wrestling your tent to get it back into its case.

Tent Overview

Constant Airflow

Tents need to maintain excellent airflow at all times to reduce the buildup of heat as well as carbon dioxide. Circulating the air also keeps you breathing fresh oxygen, while eliminating condensation from building up inside the shelter.

Large mesh windows on the front and sides can be left open to take in air, while the ceiling vent works to cycle it out. The zippered flaps on the windows allow you to adjust the airflow to your liking, and they also come in useful when it rains, or when you want some privacy.

Designed for Durability

Tent longevity is an important feature so you’re not constantly having to purchase a new one every few years. Coleman uses very good quality materials in their products, and Coleman 4 person instant tent is no exception.

Lightweight but rugged steel poles provide a strong frame that maintains its shape flawlessly, and also helps the structure stand up to strong winds.

The canopy and rainfly are made from double-thick, 150D polyester.

This gives the fabric a lightweight but durable quality that can help to reduce UV radiation, as well as minimize abrasions from poking holes in the tent. Additionally, the Weathertec welded and reinforced floor allows for a lot of foot traffic. As always, investing in a footprint to stake your tent on will prolong its life.

Ease of Use

This tent is made for easy use. While we’ve mentioned how the simple setup and its storage sack benefit you by saving time, you will also find the front door is a good size for everyone to get in and out of with ease.

Additionally, the zippers on the door and window flaps are of considerable quality, operating smoothly to avoid catching and snagging around the corners.

The interior of the tent also has some storage pockets that can be used to keep your phones and/or tablets nearby, and you can hang a light or small fan using the ceiling hook it comes with.

Conclusion

Those that are looking to for a step up in quality should seriously consider this model from Coleman.

While putting 4 people inside would be a bit cramped, 1-2 people would be ideal, perfectly balancing the space so you have enough room to enjoy yourself and move around unobstructed.

The lack of a rain fly is a bit of a downer, but it is available as a separate purchase, along with being priced very well.

With the entire Coleman 4 person instant tent plus rainfly costing under $120 USD, you will have a hard time finding a similar model that comes close to what it offers.
