Our First Thoughts

Our initial impression is that this is a very classic tent that will do the job right. There’s no fluffing about, no crazy designs or new features, but we don’t think that this is a bad thing.

Sometimes the simple things are the best, especially when they are done so well. It can actually be more difficult to get simple things right, because there is a lot more room for error. The first standout for us is the fly, as we love that it gives more coverage than other similar models by competitors.

Plus, the front door is huge and D-shaped which is so much better than a simple zipper on the wall. The price is very reasonable for the brand and for such great quality materials.

You’re getting the innovative WeatherTec system by Coleman, which is well-known and loved by many. For couple camping on vacation outdoor trips, this is a fantastic choice.

What We Love – Our Top 3 Features

GOLD FEATURE – Good Ventilation

Smaller tents can sometimes gather increased condensation due to their compact nature, but we love that they have provided multiple ventilation solutions with this model. Since the fly is semi-coverage, you need the airflow when it’s raining, and you’ve got the front door flap closed.

Roof Features Breathable Material to Keep Air Flowing

Inside, you can see small netted openings on each wall, including the back, to let any hot air escape. Plus, the mesh roof is there to let more hot air out when you have the fly installed.

SILVER FEATURE – Good Coverage Awning

The small front canopy that hangs over the front door is better than most we’ve seen. It’s very curved and extends quite far. This helps to push any collected water off the roof and away from the door.

Enough Space for a Double Mattress, and then some

Even though you can close the storm flap on the entrance, the door has a lot of stitching and it needs to be protected from moisture to prevent easy leaks.

BRONZE FEATURE – Front Door

For a smaller capacity model, we think the front door is a huge benefit. It almost covers the entire wall, and the D-shape makes things so much easier. Other cheaper tents around this price range usually have simple zippers, where it can be frustrating to constantly zip and unzip as you get out.

Main Overview – Breaking Down Every Detail

Conventional Pitch

Coleman has 3 main set up options – the conventional, fast, and instant. This model has the conventional pitch, which isn’t as fast as the others, but we think it is still easy and straightforward to do.

Simple Assembly Can Be Done Alone

It only takes between 10 and 20 minutes depending on your experience, and you’re provided with all the accessories like stakes and rope.

Weather Resistance

The system called WeatherTec is patented by this brand and truly gives a high level of weather resistance. Of course, it’s not going to protect you from torrential rains or extreme gale force winds, but it doesn’t claim to, and this is a model on the lower end in terms of price.

Keep Secure in its Waterproof Carry Bag

The quality is still there though, with robust Polyguard double thick fabric. The seams are all inverted, so needle holes are covered to stop leaks. The frame is tested against 35MPH+ winds, and the zippers all have cuffs on them for great protection. The floors are thicker than the rest of the tent, with all the corners welded for reinforced protection. This also eliminates the need for stitching holes.

Rainfly

While the flysheet isn’t full coverage, it still covers the door with the mini awning and the rest of it comes down very low. It doesn’t touch the ground, but the sides and back are close to the floor and provide more protection than most 2 season models.

Storage Pockets are Meshed to Prevent Water Pooling

For this reason, we think you could use this in 3 seasons, as long as you use seam sealer, and underground footprint, and use the right warm camping gear to keep you comfortable.

Floor Space

This has a lot of floor space for such a small capacity. There is more than enough room for 1 queen air mattress, or 2 two standard twin sleeping bags and pads with room leftover for gear storage. You can stretch out and sleep comfortably. Plus, the rounded roof shape lets you kneel to easily get changed.

Most Asked Questions – We’ve Got You Covered

Can you Camp in this in the Winter?

While we do rank this as a 2-season tent, we think you could use it in colder weather. Perhaps not in the dead of winter, but in milder conditions it should keep you well protected.

As we mentioned above, you could increase its weather resistance through sealing the seams further, using proper camping sleeping bags and mats, and also getting stronger stakes and guy ropes is a good idea.

Is this a Freestanding Tent?

No, it is not, and you should secure it down with stakes and guylines. You are provided with stakes in the package, but you can use your own more heavy-duty ones if you’re going to be pitching it in an area with high winds.

Our Final Thoughts on the Coleman Highline

For a spacious and well protected camping experience with one other person, we think this is a very reliable choice. You’re getting top value here when you look at the fair price tag.

The straightforward set up makes it easier to assemble, and the framework is strong enough to withstand heavier winds. It packs compact for transportation, plus it’s lightweight enough to share the load between 2 people and go hiking or backpacking.

The interior space gives you fantastic wiggle room plus storage, and the rainfly has awesome coverage for a warmer weather tent. If you’re a casual camper who goes on the weekends or on short trips, we highly recommend this model.
