We like what Rightline has created in their truck tent: a middle-of-the-road model that will perform well when exposed to the elements. That’s all we can really ask of a tent, and in this respect, Rightline knocks it out of the park. They’ve made it very easy to setup, and it sits snug to the frame of the truck, which keeps any moisture from slipping through the cracks.

While it is designed to shelter two people, the truck tent can be extended by adding Rightline’s SUV tent to it. This gives you and your family/friends more sleep space in a combined shelter. With good quality materials, multiple sizes, and plenty of bells and whistles, we feel this is a great tent for moderate campers, or those that are just beginning their journey into truck tent camping.

GOLD QUALITY – Light & Airy Performance

The performance of this tent is second to none, and uses a mixture of lightweight materials to keep you out of the elements in a comfortable shelter. The shell and rainfly are both made of 68D polyester, lending to excellent performance while maintaining its cost-efficient price tag.

Polyester is a very popular option when it comes to tent fabrics, as the material isn’t heavy, can be waterproofed, is breathable, and doesn’t sag when exposed to water. Ridgeline also makes this tent resistant to UV light and fire, adding a layer of safety that many tents won’t have.

Fiberglass poles provide the tent’s dome frame. These poles are also lightweight, and shock-corded for easy assembly and disassembly. They are a flexible material that is strong enough to give the tent a rigid structure to stand up to high winds.

The tent also includes mesh windows that will keep the bugs out of your sleep space. These openings also have a storm flap on them that can be zipped up to regulate ventilation of the tent.

SILVER FEATURE – Simple to Setup

While it will take a couple of tries to get the tent pitched in a respectable amount of time, Rightline ensures it can be set up by a single person, including instructions in the box and even providing a video tutorial on their website.

The tent’s canopy fits around the lowered tailgate and rests atop the truck’s bed rails, giving you a snug shelter that works to seal the outer world from the inside of the tent. Various straps are included, which connect to the underside of the truck’s body, and tighten for a secure fit.

There are 3 shock-corded (and color-coded), fiberglass poles that connect together to provide the tent’s sturdy yet flexible frame. 2 of them cross over for the traditional “X” dome tent design, and the remaining pole adds structural support for the entry way.

Once these are threaded through the pole sleeves on the tent, you can raise it and secure the end of each pole into its respective pocket. Various clips are also found on the shell to further secure the tent to the frame.

If you want to stay dry when wet weather hits, you’ll need to attach the rain fly. This is easily done by throwing it over the tent, and connecting its buckles before tightening them for a taut fit.

BRONZE HIGHLIGHT –  Let It Rain

Any tent worth considering needs to have some kind of waterproofing features, and this truck tent has plenty to keep the rain from ruin your camping adventure.

For starters, the way the tent is designed is with waterproofing in mind. It fits tight to the bed rails and wraps around the lowered tailgate to keep water from leaking in. It’s dome shape also ensures rain will easily roll off the shelter and truck.

Using the included rain fly is imperative when wet weather strikes. This is because the main tent has two mesh skylight vents where water can easily pour in. Connecting the fly to the tent is simple as it drapes over the shelter and has 4 buckles that easily attach and tighten down. The rain fly is also coated in a 2000mm waterproofing agent, and has taped seams for additional protection.

Of note, Rightline does not include a floor, which is a testament to its watertight capabilities. No wet weather will be getting through this thing! If you do require a floor, we recommend going with a tarp or blanket for added comfort.

Main Overview – Breaking Down Every Detail

The Rightline Gear Truck Tent is a multi-functional outdoor shelter that comes with many features for increasing your comfort during your next camping trip.

Not only does this truck tent come in multiple sizes for the perfect fit to your truck, it can also be extended using Rightline’s SUV tent. This is a great feature that families can benefit from, as you can have parents in the truck tent, while the kids can be nearby in ground tent. Additionally, you can use the secondary tent as a lounge area if you are only 2 campers.

The SUV tent is an 8 x 8 foot dome tent with over 7 feet of height, and has a long sleeve to connect the two shelters. It uses all the same materials as the truck tent, but also includes a rugged polyethylene bathtub floor. This helps extend the tent’s life, while providing a barrier against ground water soaking through.

Its further waterproofed with a rain fly, taped seams, built-in awnings, and storm flaps on the windows and door. For privacy, you can zip up the truck tent’s door to keep the two sleep spaces separate, and it comes with everything you need to pitch and store it with ease.

More Than One Way

Trucks aren’t all the same size, so it stands to reason that truck tents need to be different sizes as well. Rightline only makes 1 truck tent model, but offers it in multiple sizes to fit any pickup.

You will have to consult their sizing chart to find the proper fit for your truck, but tents are available for compact, mid-size, and full-size trucks. Rightline also makes full and mid-size air mattresses that you can use with the tent for a more comfortable bed.

Stargaze Away

One of the best aspects of camping is getting a chance to look up at the night sky without the interference of light pollution. The truck tent has two no-see-um mesh panels at the peak of it.

This allows you to avoid the night bugs while enjoying unobstructed views of the twinkling sky. With no bug bites, and plenty of fresh air cycling through the tent, you get a good night’s sleep every time.

Interior Essentials

The interior of this truck tent includes a few bells and whistles for you. It has a few hanging storage pockets which make it easy for you to keep the essentials within arm’s reach at all times, as well as off the bed floor for maximum leg room.

At the ceiling’s peak is a small hook that can be used to illuminate the tent at night using a lantern or light. When nature calls in the middle of the night, you can easily locate the door’s zipper as it is outfitted in glow-in-the-dark pulls for convenience.

Easy on The Wallet

Rightline Gear doesn’t ask too much for their truck tent, keeping it at a reasonable price that’s in line with what their competitors charge. It’s definitely a middle of the road tent: a big step up from a budget model, but not exactly top of the line either. Those looking for a well-built, durable, and multi-functional truck tent will be happy with what their money can buy in this model.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size truck can this tent fit?

The Rightline Gear truck tent comes in multiple sizes, allowing you to fit it to any truck model. You will need to consult their sizing chart to find the proper size for your vehicle.

My truck has a tonneau cover, do I need to remove it for this tent?

Not at all. As long as the cover is folded up against the cab’s glass, the tent should still fit onto your truck. However, you may need to secure the cover with additional rope or bungees so it stays in place.

Do I need to remove my tool box to use this tent?

Most likely yes. If you keep a toolbox in your bed it will limit the amount of room you have inside the tent. The design of this shelter is such that it rests on top of the truck bed, and if your toolbox also rests on top, you won’t be able to use both at the same time.

Can I drive while the tent is strapped to the truck?

This depends on how far and fast you are driving. If you are moving at low speeds and very short distances (i.e. campsite to campsite), it should be ok. But we would highly advise against driving with the tent attached for long distances and faster speeds. Doing so could cause catastrophic damage to the tent.

Can one person install this tent?

Yes, it’s pretty simple to set up once you get the hang of it, as it comes with only a few poles and everything clips or buckles together. Initially, it may take some time to get used to how everything attaches, but the more you use it, the faster the setup time will be.

Can I use Rightline’s SUV tent with this truck tent?

Yes, you can. The SUV tent is a full-size, 64 square footer that can be connected to your truck tent to give you more sleep space for you and your family/friends.

What is the warranty term on this tent?

Rightline Gear provides a 1-year warranty on their truck tent. It covers any problems due to manufacturer error.

Conclusion on Rightline Gears Truck Tent

An all rounder for the masses, Rightline Gear’s truck tent is a winner on all fronts. Its compact, easy to setup and break down, is waterproof, well-vented, and lets you gaze at the stars while laying down in comfort.

It provides plenty of room for you and your fellow camper, and while it does lack a few premium features (i.e. cab access window, tent floor), they aren’t deal breakers, and it still performs well with what it does give you.
